INVITED
GUEST:
Robert Dalva, Editor
Based
on the true story of housewife Evelyn Ryan who helped support
her family by winning entries in jingle-writing contests
that were the rage in the 50's and early 60's. The film
operates on several levels: as a revealing study of the
housewife's plight during the Eisenhower era, an inspiring
tale of tenacity and survival against formidable odds, and
a family drama that tempers sentimental nostalgia with the
emotional toll of harsh reality. Can the loving, optimistic
Evelyn hold the family together? Is she justified in placing
her faith in her deeply-flawed husband? How will her 10
children turn out?
Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore gives a performance
of incredible depth and nuance. Woody Harrelson also succeeds
in giving her husband a soul, making it clear that he is
just as much a victim of societal expectations as Evelyn
is.
"…bitter sweet, satirically savvy…" New York Times
"…Moore is the heart and soul of Prizewinner and worth of
prize considerations come Oscar time." SF Chronicle
"Rarely
do you have a movie in which both lead actors give Oscar-worthy
performances."
The Arizona Republic
